Mercury retrograde 2019

Making the Most of Every Mercury Retrograde Moment by Blesilda C. De La Rosa

Note: In 2019, Mercury goes retrograde during March 5-28, July 7-31, and October 31-November 20.

Why don’t we make a list of what you CAN do during the periods when Mercury is retrograde? The way some experts put it, with all those lists of “don’ts” – don’t buy electronics, don’t sign contracts, don’t start any important ventures, et cetera – you would think you’d have to bury your head in the sand! But since life goes on, Mercury retrograde or not, what can you do to make the most of every Mercury retrograde moment?

You know, it’s easy enough to remember these RE – words:

1. Reconsider your plans.
Since Mercury rules transportation, communication, electronics, and contracts, then maybe you should schedule your agenda during this period. This may mean anything from re-scheduling canceled appointments to postponing the purchase of electronic equipment like phones or computers. Use this time to reboot and refresh your projects.

2. Relax, reflect, and receive.
It’s not healthy to be on forward motion all the time. The universe gives you these 3-week periods three times a year so you can slow down, meditate, and learn more about yourself. If the rest of the year finds you on the giving end in terms of the actions you take, then a Mercury retrograde period puts you on the receiving end, for a change. Download all that insight and reflection so you can be a better person.

3. Remove the trash.
Clear out clutter and physical trash – but more importantly, cut out toxic habits, relationships, and ingrained tendencies toward worry and anxiety.

4. Remember your lessons in love, work, or money from the past. Repeat the steps that worked successfully and gently bid adieu to schemes that didn’t. Mercury retrograde periods are notorious for being the setting for returning karmic connections. If you have done your homework and taken out the trash, then you won’t be blindsided by nostalgia.

Remember your past triumphs so that going forward, you are ready to level up in applying the beneficial lessons in your brilliant life!

“Remembering a couple of notable Aries people” in this week’s issue of the MANILA MAIL (April 1-7, 2015; page A5)

Pilipinasblitz Forever
A column by Bles Carmona

For the week of April 1-7, 2015

REMEMBERING A COUPLE OF NOTABLE ARIES PEOPLE

April will always be the best month for me because I have my birthday on the 4th and in my mind, I have always associated April with a lot of happy memories. Growing up in Manila, that was when pupils like me had our summer vacation from school. For me, that’s the time to read amazing books, walk aimlessly, or play outside with my friends. Yes! We actually used to play outside until the midnight curfew. We played taguan, patintero, tumbang preso, luksong tinik, Chinese garter, and my favorite: siyato. If you need an explanation about any of the games I just mentioned, just email me.

Since I have Leo rising in my natal chart, sooner or later the glamor of showbiz would rub off on me one way or another. There will always be a part of me that will yearn for the spotlight in any of the performing arts. True enough, in my younger years, I had the privilege of working with the great Aries-born Filipino film director Lino Brocka (Apr. 3, 1939-May 21, 1991). It also helped that my mother, Aida Carmona, popularly known then as “Aling Atang” of the soap opera “Flordeluna,” has already been bitten well by the showbiz bug herself. My mother has starred as a supporting actress in many commercially and critically acclaimed films from the 1970s-1990s. However, among the memories that she cherishes the most were those of her several opportunities to work closely with Tito Lino, whom Mom calls a true “actor’s director.”

I asked my Mom to relate three distinct instances she can recall about Tito Lino. First off, when they were shooting a film in Currimao, Ilocos Norte, Tito Lino beheld the sand and the ocean (the South China Sea) and told my Mom, “Dito ko gustong magretiro. Ipagpapagawa ko ng bahay dito ang nanay ko.” (Transl.: “This is where I want to retire. I will build a house for my mother here.”) From this heartfelt declaration of Tito Lino, my mother felt his loving concern for his mother. Another thing that my Mom can recall was Tito Lino’s concern for film extras.

He would insist that the extras be allowed to eat first. His reasoning was that the extras do not have the luxury of bringing their own “baon” (lunch) on location shoots, hence, they should be the first ones to line up and get their respective meals. Still another memory that my mother shared with me about Tito Lino concerns his commitment to the arts. Mom asked him to chair a panel of judges in the Manila public high schools original one-act play contest. This contest was joined by the winning plays from each of the districts of Manila (Division of City Schools). Held at the Manila Science High School, this Playfest stood out in my Mom’s memory because right there and then, when Tito Lino announced the first place winning school, he immediately told the audience that he is donating PhP 5,000 out of his own pocket as first prize– which, in the 1980s, was a big deal of money especially for public high school students.

The great Lino Brocka was the recipient of many international and local directing awards. It was in 1977 when he was invited to show his film “Insiang” during the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival in France. This was followed by repeat invitations to Cannes on the strength of “Jaguar” in 1980 and “Bona” in 1981. Tito Lino’s film “Angela Markado” was entered to compete and it won Best Picture at the Nantes Film Festival in France. In 1984, his “Bayan Ko: Kapit sa Patalim” was exhibited in Cannes and it also won Best Picture with the British Film Institute. He received the 1985 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature, and Creative Communication Arts; the 1989 Gawad CCP Para sa Sining Pampelikula; and the 1990 Lamberto Avellana Memorial Award. A few years after his death, he was conferred the 1992 FAP Lifetime Achievement Award and the posthumous recognition of being a National Artist for Film.

I have fond memories of the great Lino Brocka, too. In 1979, along with my Mom and younger sister Cherry, who was 7 while I was 9, I was part of the ensemble support cast of Tito Lino’s “Ina, Kapatid, Anak” which involved location shoots in Magalang, Pampanga. I was googly-eyed at seeing Lolita Rodriguez, Charito Solis, and Rio Locsin in person! A few months later, I was again on location shoots in Tondo, Manila for “Jaguar,” where my Mom played my Nanay in the film too. In this film, I had not just one but several speaking lines, interacting with the characters played by Philip Salvador and Amy Austria. It was our director, Tito Lino Brocka himself, who gave me directions. He gave me his instructions as if I were an adult in whose acting ability he already has confidence. (He’s an actor’s director, remember?) True enough, after shooting some of my scenes on my first day on the set, I heard Tito Lino tell my Mom and the production manager (PM) that he’s increasing my per diem pay from Php 100 to Php 150. I was overwhelmed at the amount of money. Imagine that! My parents said that it would go towards my education and it did. Overall I think I had a call slip (to report for shooting) for a total of five days. My next project to be directed by Tito Lino was supposed to be a one-hour television drama pilot episode. However, some pre-production kinks weren’t ironed out so that pilot was never taped. I was 10 years old at the time. If that TV project pushed through, who knows where I would be now? A popular movie star? A serious, award-winning film actress?

Well, I have a very good friend who is both a movie star and an award-winning actress in Philippine showbiz, and her name is Snooky Serna. Cookie, as she is fondly called by those who know her well, is another Aries, being born on April 4, 1966. Take note, my friend Cookie and I share the same day of birth except for the year (mine’s 1970). I first met Cookie in person in 1988, during the shoot of a film helmed by Maryo J. Delos Reyes, “Kapag Napagod ang Puso.” My mother was part of the cast and I happened to be her “chaperone,” or in other words I was just a hanger-on. There was a female extra who didn’t show up, who was supposed to play Anjo Yllana’s squeeze but only for that scene. Apparently in the movie as Snooky’s younger brother, Anjo’s character will be changing girlfriends with each scene that he’ll be in. I was there, and maybe a PM pointed me out to Tito Maryo J, and the next thing I knew, I was led to the makeup corner to be fussed over and dolled up for the shoot.

Then of course it was time to get into our seats in that mini-theater. If memory serves me right it was at the Magnatech Omni in QC. The moment I caught Cookie’s eye, I excitedly gushed, “Miss Snooky, ang ganda-ganda ni’yo po.” She humbly thanked me. Not done yet, I told her, “Pareho po tayo ng birthday (We share a birthday),” to which Cookie said, “Ay, kaya pala pareho tayong mabait!” (“Oh, so that’s why both of us are kind.”)

The next time I met Cookie 10 years later, it was the start of a deeper friendship borne of common struggles and concerns. I can tell you firsthand that Ms. Snooky Serna is truly beautiful inside and out. Her heart is generous and kind, many times to a fault, because she feels other people’s pain and neediness too much. In terms of Snooky’s stellar career as an excellent actress “trained” in the Lino Brocka “school of acting,” in which Method is so overrated in favor of a more natural sort of acting: Cookie actually won her first award as FAMAS Best Child Performer in 1972 for the film “Sana Mahalin Mo Ako.” Then she was nominated for several films throughout the years until her Best Actress win in 1994 for “Koronang Itim” from FAMAS and the Cebu Archdiocese Mass Media Awards. One of her most recent wins was for Best Supporting Actress for the film “Paupahan” from the FAMAS and PMPC Star Awards in 2008. Snooky also won awards for her television portrayals. When I asked her what she really wanted most in life, Cookie said, “To raise my kids well and to act.” Hence we can say that acting is one major motivator for her. Cookie has always prayed that she be given film or TV projects that would challenge her as an actress because she is simply passionate about her craft.

For my part, I admit that I started out as Snooky’s fan when I was still in grade school, and then moved on to become her friend and confidante when I was in my late 20s before I moved to California in 2004. I look back on how I’d save my allowance so I could buy the movie magazines “Jingle Sensation” and “Jingle Extra Hot” every week so that I could keep track of Cookie’s films and any new “chismis.” Then fast-forward to our chance meeting in a waiting area somewhere, from which our deep friendship actually took root.

Cookie and I still keep in touch until now. I am humbled and privileged to know her. A fan dreams of meeting her idol, even if only to catch a glimpse of the movie star’s radiance. I dreamed of meeting Snooky Serna in person even just once, and now I’m one of her good friends, having gone through thick and thin with her not just once but many times.

Who knew? My dream did come true. Happy Solar Return to all our fellow Aries peeps!

“HOW TO FIND YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL” in this week’s issue of the MANILA MAIL (January 14-20, 2015, page A7) (Photo credits: www.fabricandart.com)

HOW TO FIND YOUR SPIRIT ANIMAL

Have you ever wondered about the spiritual world of our Native American brethren? There are 562 federally recognized tribal governments in the United States (America.gov) – have you ever wondered what beliefs may be shared among them?

Since Native American religion is partly Earth-centered (especially before the arrival of Christianity), part of their cosmology is the belief in spirit animals. How do we find our spirit animal and how can we be open to what our spirit animal is teaching us?

At http://www.spiritanimal.info (site editor Elena Harris), you will find a plethora of information on spirit animals. For instance, there are many ways to find your spirit animal: through meditation, going in nature and observing, calling the animal, process of self-inquiry, writing about it in your journal, imagination, and journeying with sound. Animals are everywhere in our lives, whether as pets or as free agents, and yet we fail to grasp their symbolic nature. In effect, we miss what they’re trying to teach us and thus we miss the opportunity to improve our lives. In the world of spirit animals, they can symbolize: aspects of your personality, skills or traits that you have cultivated successfully or have yet to develop, a situation or an emotion that has recently arisen. Spirit animals can also offer guidance and intuitive understanding.

When we bond with an animal spirit guide, we are encouraged to: discover ourselves by getting a felt sense of our strengths and weaknesses, the skills we have developed, and our potential; loosen up our personality and habits and open up to transformation; open up to new perspectives on our relationship with nature and the Earth as a whole; feel the power of the animal and be inspired by its qualities; and call on the animal spirit to get support and guidance. For those with ears that listen, our spirit animals can provide guidance on: an aspect of yourself that is already strongly developed or needs to be explored more; a situation or environment in your everyday life that has a strong emotional impact; and a life direction you could consider or reflect on (www.spiritanimal.info). In the website, there are quizzes you can take to determine your animal totem, and I got “Bear,” which apparently stands for strength, confidence, taking action, healing, solitude, and grounding – among other meanings. Don’t worry, because when you get your result, the website will explain what your spirit animal means. There is another quiz for discovering your “inner animal,” and another one for finding out your “social animal.” For my inner animal, my result was that I was either an Owl or a Hummingbird, and for my social animal, I was either a Bear (again?!) or a Butterfly. I guess it may take a while for me to be equated with a less hefty spirit animal (grin). I’m not complaining, though. I like what my Bear is teaching me.

Now let’s compare the above system with these “Native American Zodiac Signs via Algonquin wisdom” written by Avia Venefica, a symbolist, metaphysician, part-Native American, and self-proclaimed heretic, always questioning, discovering, and learning. Avia maintains several websites, but this piece on “Native American Zodiac Signs” was retrieved from http://www.tokenrock.com. I suggest that you visit the website to view the complete descriptions.

Hawk (Mar 21-Apr 20)
You have expansive vision, and your ability to see beyond what common reality holds is extraordinary. As a visionary with an intrepid streak in tackling new adventures – people look to you as a natural leader. Part of your life lesson is knowing when others are plucking your feathers for their selfish gain. Spreading your wings and shining more radiantly is the solution. In this way, you uplift through example.

Moose (Apr 21-May 20)
You are a gentle giant among your tribe. Your heart has a massive capacity for love and provision, particularly concerning matters of home and family. You know your own power, but often elect to keep that power on reserve and in-check. Creature comforts, family, friends, sharing and tender moments of simplicity nurture your soul. All these heartwarming and endearing tendencies of yours vanish if you feel anything you value is threatened. If you perceive harm against your herd, you will strike with chilling vengeance. Part of your life lesson is to learn flexibility in your perception and to better discern which battles to pick and which to avoid.

Owl (May 21-Jun 21)
Your tribal kin have a hard time following you, in spite of your phenomenal ability to intelligently communicate your thoughts to them. It has to do with a higher level of knowing which is your set-point. Part of your life lesson is to utilize your ability to see people from all angles and have patience with those who have trouble keeping up with you in the skies you fly.

Sturgeon (June 22-July 22)
You have an incredible lineage for intuitive knowing (typically passed from your mother), and the waves of your intuitive perception are best expressed through artistic manifestations. Poetry, art, music are all effective tools for you to convey the world you see. This is why you are typically the storyteller of the tribe, because you reach deep within your emotional whirlpools to access incredible ancient knowing. Your lesson is to use your fluctuating moods and intensely sensitive/emotional nature work to your advantage as well as the advantage of the community.

Mountain Lion (July 23-Aug 22)
As a mountain dweller, you are fueled by the realms of the sun, and easily attain high levels of success. Your tribal kin would call you lucky because they observe things always working out for your best interest. You would say you are extremely skilled, highly observant, and you know how to strategize or work the system to your best advantage. This is true. Nevertheless, people look up to you upon your mountain and view you as the tribal hero/heroine. Part of your life lesson is to funnel your assertiveness as a means to guide and effectively lead without manipulating or crushing the vulnerable spirits of the souls placed in your charge.

Deer (Aug 23-Sep 23)
You are extraordinarily attuned to your environment – having a ‘sixth sense’ about how things should be, and instantaneously knowing when something is ‘out of place.’ Fortunately, you are incredibly deft at putting things back into order. The disparagement between classes often leaves you fleeing from mainstream society. Your lesson is to learn how to meet your clansmen on their level without stooping below your own.

Eagle (Sept 24-Oct 22)
You are the equalizer of your tribal community. You have an inherent ability to focus your awareness in two directions which gives you the gift of foresight and hindsight simultaneously. Your clansmen look to you to settle disputes and arguments because of your advanced skills at discernment. You also have an evolved sense of equality. Your life lessons will typically revolve around themes of balance. In fact, you may manifest this balance in staggering ways by balancing unconventional with conventional having a ‘public’ life and a ‘secret’ life.

Beaver (Oct 23-Nov 22)
You swim in rivers of vast potential and wonder where reality and dreams comingle with ease. When the outside world does not comply with your perception of what it should be – you simply construct worlds of your own unique design and live there quite contently. Tribal members will seek you to interpret their dreams because you are so familiar with the constructs of parallel worlds. Part of your life lesson is to be mindful other people in your reconstructive/transformative behaviors as the actions you take can sometimes cause emotional blockages for others.

Red Fox (Nov 23-Dec 21)
You incorporate a sense of play into the tribal community that is vital. Without your levity, and high energy your clansmen would be left deflated. When properly motivated, you have the ability to drive sharp intellect into the heart of grand philosophical concepts – piercing core issues with the gift of honed insight. Your lesson is to know your own limits and to recognize your potential through focus and self-grounding.

Black Bear (Dec 22-Jan 20)
You often find yourself in a position of tribal elder in your community because you represent a foundational cornerstone within the tribe. In reality, you have a unique ability to see several steps ahead and know how to incorporate practical measures to bring about solid results to any endeavor. You recognize the value of hard work in order to obtain a goal. More importantly, you have a quality of patience that is remarkable. Part of your life lesson is to recognize that even though your ways are proven reliable, they are not always they right ways for everyone (particularly the tribal youths).

Wolf (Jan 21-Feb 19)
You have a gift of specialized wisdom and even the skill of prophecy. You are infinitely generous to those within your clan and can be incredibly protective over your assets. But your sense of loyalty to the whole of your community is legendary. Your unique knowing and perspective leads you to contribute incredible insights, inventions and evolutionary ideas to the your community. Part of your life lesson is to develop communication skills that convey your ideas more clearly with a goal for communal acceptance.

Grey Whale (Feb 20-Mar 20)
You will likely find yourself living on the outskirts of the tribe – not because you do not wish for fellowship, but because living in isolation affords you the luxury of gathering your internal resources for the great spiritual work you are called to do, usually in the form of healing. The members of your clan will seek you out as their tribal healer. Even those outside of your tribe will travel great distances to receive insight, cleansing, and healing from you. Your life lessons revolve around keeping your individuality while serving the community. Also, you must learn to respect your unique needs for self-nurturing, relaxation and seclusion when you need it.
*****
I hope you have fun discovering your spirit animal and through your meditative explorations, be open to what your animal, in its wisdom, says about one or more of these things: 1. An aspect of yourself that you either need to develop more or is already over-emphasized, 2. A situation in your life right now that is having a strong emotional impact on you, or 3. A life direction you are being urged to consider or reflect upon.

Whether your spirit animal dwells over the land, above in the sky, or in the depths of the sea, there is no need to hunt it down, for lo! It is already right there resting beneath your feet. Ask for its wisdom and wisdom you shall receive.
